ITR12 Income Tax Return Guide South Africa 2026
ITR12 Income Tax Return Guide: File With Confidence in 2026
Last Updated: September 2026 | Reading Time: 7 minutes
The ITR12 is the personal income tax return every South African taxpayer files on SARS eFiling or the MobiApp. This guide walks you through requesting, completing and submitting it – and what happens next.
Quick Answer
The ITR12 is SARS’s personal income tax return form. You request it on eFiling, answer the wizard questions so the right containers open, check the pre-populated IRP5, medical and investment data, add anything missing, declare deductions, and submit. SARS then issues your ITA34 assessment – the deadline for non-provisional taxpayers is 23 October 2026.
Who Must File an ITR12?
You generally must file if you: earned more than the tax threshold; had more than one employer; received a travel allowance; earned rental, freelance or foreign income; realised capital gains above R40,000; or are a provisional taxpayer. Many single-employer taxpayers earning under R500,000 with correct PAYE are excused – but if SARS auto-assessed you, review rather than ignore: see what is an auto assessment.
Step-by-Step: Completing the ITR12
Step 1: Request the return
Log in to eFiling, go to Returns > Returns Issued > Personal Income Tax (ITR12), select the 2026 year and click Request. The return wizard opens.
Step 2: Answer the wizard honestly
The wizard questions decide which sections (“containers”) open – foreign income, capital gains, rental income, deductions. Answer yes to anything that applies; a missing container means undeclared income.
Step 3: Verify pre-populated data
Check IRP5 figures against your paper certificates (see the IRP5 guide), plus IT3(b) interest, IT3(c) capital gains and medical scheme data. If something is missing, add it manually with your certificate in hand.
Step 4: Claim your deductions
Retirement annuity contributions not on your IRP5, additional medical expenses, section 18A donations, and travel claims backed by your logbook.
Step 5: Submit and save
Click Submit, then save the submitted return PDF and the ITA34 that follows within a day or two. Keep everything for five years.
What Happens After You Submit
SARS issues your ITA34 notice of assessment. If you are selected for verification, respond within the stated deadline with clear scans of your supporting documents. Refunds of R100 or more pay out within about 72 hours once banking details are verified.
Mistakes That Trigger SARS Queries
- Overwriting pre-populated IRP5 figures with your own numbers.
- Forgetting a second IRP5 from a job you left mid-year.
- Claiming deductions without certificates in your files.
- Ignoring the auto assessment and then also not filing – SARS treats the auto assessment as final.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an ITR12 and an ITA34?
The ITR12 is the return you complete and submit to SARS. The ITA34 is the notice of assessment SARS sends back afterwards, showing its calculation of your tax and whether you are due a refund or owe money.
Can I file my ITR12 on my phone?
Yes. The SARS MobiApp supports full ITR12 filing for individuals, including viewing pre-populated data, submitting the return and tracking the assessment and refund status.
What if I make a mistake on my submitted ITR12?
You can request a correction on eFiling (Request for Correction) as long as SARS has not finalised an audit or assessment dispute on that return. For auto-assessed taxpayers, simply file a corrected ITR12 by the 23 October 2026 deadline.
